How can a blocked entrance be symbolized?

Like for example, in the story of Lazarus rising form the dead, he walks out of the tomb (a cave) where the stone is moved aside to let him walk out. How does the BLOCKED tomb make a symbolic meaning? What would it be? I think this is pretty interesting in thinking about biblical allusions.
